Meidensha: Multiple Inquires for Our Salient 4-Pole Turbine Generator, Operating since May

TOKYO–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Meidensha Corporation (TOKYO: 6508), Yuji Hamasaki, President, and headquartered in Tokyo’s Shinagawa Ward, has developed high efficient, compact, and lightweight salient type 4-pole turbine generator. The first unit was shipped in January 2016 to a biomass energy plant in Japan’s Tohoku region, and successfully started its operating in May 2016.

Compared with the conventional cylindrical pole type, this salient pole type realized upwards of 20% of loss reduction by means of the reduction of mechanical and field losses arising from the change of the rotor type from cylindrical to salient one. The resulting efficiency, 98.3%, ranks this generator among the highest class in the global market. Design optimization that grew out of simpler structures and the latest technological analysis resulted in 30% weight reduction, compared with the previous type, making this generator more compact and lightweight. Furthermore, this generator also realized the shorter lead-time by a parallel production of rotors.

The increased efficiency and downsizing is earning great praise from customers. Not only have there been multiple inquiries from domestic companies, there have also been a large number of inquiries from ASEAN countries. Meidensha is planning to ship ten units by the end of FY2016, including the unit shipped in January.

Going forward, Meidensha plans to increase the output capacity to the world’s highest level, 70 MVA. There are also plans to decrease size and weight even further, using the latest insulation technologies and the optimized cooling structures. Meidensha will also use the Internet of Things (IoT) technology that the entire company is actively involved in to optimize maintenance through the monitoring of generator status and through predictive fault diagnostics.

The Meiden Group will celebrate 120 years since its foundation next year. The focus will continue to be on meeting the ever-changing power demand as a company that supports social infrastructures, working to create a brighter future.

NOTE 1: Target amount for FY2017 orders of turbine and engine generators, including the salient 4-pole models.
