Merck’s new Blarney site in Cork expands company’s filter capacity, creating 200+ jobs by 2028

The 3,000-square-meter cleanroom facility supports global demand for critical filtration products used in the manufacturing of vaccines and life-saving therapies, including monoclonal antibodies, and emerging modalities like cell and gene therapies. By localizing these capacities in Europe, Merck hopes to reduce cross-border dependencies for the company’s customers.

The facility is expected to begin production in the fourth quarter of 2025 and will manufacture filtration devices used in aseptic processing, tangential-flow filtration and virus filtration. These filtration technologies are key components of most bioprocessing templates and are vital to controlling bioburden, streamlining purification and removing viral contaminants. They assure vaccines and therapeutics meet expected purity standards and are safe for administration to patients.

The new site will run on 100% renewable electricity and an innovative heat recovery system, which is estimated to avoid up to 61 metric tons of CO₂ equivalents annually. It will also reuse up to 95% of high-purity reverse osmosis water from its filtration manufacturing process.

The Blarney Business Park facility is part of Merck’s largest Life Science investment to date. Together with the nearby Carrigtwohill site, the company has committed €440 million to expand membrane and filtration manufacturing in Ireland. These investments are part of Merck’s €2 billion Life Science global expansion program, announced in 2020, to meet growing demand for life-saving therapies across Europe, China, and the United States.

Vantage Data Centers’ second London campus features one of Europe’s largest permanent public art installations.

Coinciding with this year’s London Design Festival taking place from Sept. 13-21 and in association with the Park Royal Design District (PRDD), the data center features one of the largest permanent public art installations in Europe. Spanning a six-story facade, 11 Million Dots pays homage to the industrial history of Park Royal while celebrating its revitalization as a thriving new urban destination for both residents and businesses. Commissioned with the help of London-based art consultancy, Loom, local artist Rafael El Baz collected ambient noise and machinery sounds from area streets and workshops and recorded more than 120 audio interviews with locals. He then translated his recordings into binary code and audio waveforms and manipulated them to create 11 million perforations that evoke microchips, maps and city landscapes.

As part of Vantage’s ongoing commitment to energy efficiency and sustainability, the LHR2 campus incorporates a number of sustainable features in accordance with BREEAM Excellent status, including air and water source heat pumps and an overall low power usage effectiveness (PUE). In addition, LHR2 is an Urban Greening Factor compliant site and will also connect to the local district heating network to repurpose waste heat.

AXA IM Alts is gestart met de bouw van ‘The Stack,’ een hybride kantoorgebouw van circa 17.100 m² in hout in het centrum van München. Het project, ontworpen door Wilmotte & Associés Architectes en uitgevoerd door RKW Architektur +, streeft naar marktleidende milieuprestaties door een duurzame houthybride bouwmethode te combineren met groene energietechnologie en biofiele ontwerpkenmerken.

Over het geheel genomen heeft de strategie het mogelijk gemaakt om de koolstofvoetafdruk van het project drastisch te verkleinen ten opzichte van een typische nieuwbouw, waardoor het LCBI-label ‘Excellent’ al in de ontwerpfase werd behaald.

Er werden koolstofarme bouwmaterialen gebruikt, met circa 1.800 kubieke meter sparrenhout uit Oostenrijk, met een opgenomen CO₂-uitstoot van 325,5 kg/m² (30% minder dan DGNB-gecertificeerde massieve constructie).

Het gebouw is tevens voorzien van stadskoeling en -verwarming van de gemeentelijke nutsbedrijven van München en maakt gebruik van de beste technologieën, waarbij de operationele CO₂-uitstoot 8,27 kg/m² bedraagt, d.w.z. 40% minder dan de DGNB-benchmark.

Geavanceerde smart building-technologie, waaronder CO₂-sensoren, variabele ventilatiesystemen en intelligente lichtregeling, reguleert de binnenluchtkwaliteit en ondersteunt een verbeterde productiviteit en welzijn op de werkplek.

Luxia, koolstofarme kantoren verbonden met het centrum van Brussel

Luxia is een hoogwaardig, koolstofarm kantoorgebouw, ontwikkeld door AXA IM Alts. Het onlangs opgeleverde, state-of-the-art gebouw van 13.000 m² (BVO), ontworpen door het Brusselse architectenbureau DDS+, is ontwikkeld volgens de principes van circulariteit. Luxia is gebouwd op behouden funderingen en hergebruikt veel materialen en het beton van het gesloopte gebouw, waardoor de koolstofvoetafdruk tijdens de bouwfase drastisch is verkleind.

Luxia, opgevat als een baanbrekend koolstofarm project, is het eerste project in België dat het LCBI-certificaat heeft ontvangen en bij oplevering het LCBI Performance-niveau heeft bereikt. Met de hoogst mogelijke score op alle ESG-prestatiecriteria wordt het erkend als een van de meest duurzame gebouwen in Brussel, gecertificeerd als BREEAM Outstanding, WELL Gold, PEB A, Airscore A, Wiredscore Gold en de labels Fossil-Free en Biodiversity.

Met de ambitie om de totale koolstofvoetafdruk van het project te minimaliseren, is Luxia erin geslaagd de Co2-uitstoot in alle fasen van de levenscyclus van het gebouw te verminderen. De koolstofvoetafdruk van de bouwfase, gemeten op volledige schaal, is beperkt tot 931 kgCO2e/m² (50 jaar) en de jaarlijkse operationele koolstofuitstoot tot een zeer lage 11,2 kgCO2e/m². Het energieverbruik is drastisch verlaagd tot 48 kWh/m²/jaar door gebruik te maken van warmtepompen, zonne-energie en een uitgebreide smart building-aanpak.

… Enkele cijfers van BBCA, de vereniging achter het LCBI-initiatief, op diezelfde dag bekendgemaakt op SIBCA in Frankrijk:

• In 2025 werd 2,25 miljoen m² toegewezen aan of gecertificeerd door BBCA (vergeleken met 1,55 miljoen in 2024 en 1,48 miljoen in 2023). Nieuwbouw is goed voor 43% van de productie.
• In slechts één jaar tijd heeft BBCA bijna 700.000 m² gecertificeerd, een stijging van bijna 100% ten opzichte van 2024.
• Sinds 2016 is het aantal lopende aanvragen of certificeringen bij BBCA opgelopen tot meer dan 5,7 miljoen m² (vergeleken met 4,55 miljoen in 2024), wat overeenkomt met 760 projecten in 2025 (vergeleken met 630 in 2024).
