Westinghouse Delivers Unprecedented Steam Generator Inspection Results

PITTSBURGH–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Westinghouse Electric Company ’s commitment to be the “first to innovate the next” has delivered the Zephyr® Advanced Acquisition System, providing plant operators significant savings in cost and dose during outages. A recent deployment saved Exelon’s Byron Unit 1 22 hours of critical path time during steam generator inspections.

During the fall 2015 outage, the Westinghouse advanced steam generator technology saved 50 hours from the last outage for the same steam generator work scope of 26,000 inspections and reduced personnel dose to 40 percent below Byron’s stretch dose objectives, with no personnel contamination events. Similar results were experienced during the first use of the technology at another plant site during the spring 2015 outage season. The technology improved safety and was delivered flawlessly during both plant outages.

“We’re proud of the extraordinary improvements to the steam generator inspection process, safety for inspection personnel, and accuracy of the results that we’re delivering to our nuclear industry customers. These plants were built to last, and our revolutionary technologies for steam generator inspection, service and maintenance are helping to protect our customers’ investments and extend plant licenses while supporting the industry’s unified mission to continually improve its exemplary record for worker safety,” said David Howell, senior vice president of Operating Plants Business for Westinghouse.

Westinghouse Electric Company, a group company of Toshiba Corporation (TKY:6502), is the world’s pioneering nuclear energy company and is a leading supplier of nuclear plant products and technologies to utilities throughout the world.
